TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama’s ever-growing footprint in the NBA continues to grow stronger as Herb Jones signed a major extension with the Pelicans this week.

Jones, a former standout for Alabama basketball, has taken a significant step forward in his professional career by signing a major contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans which will be north of $20 million per year.

This deal not only secures his place in the NBA for the foreseeable future but also underscores the Pelicans’ confidence in his continued development and impact on the court.

Jones, known for his defensive prowess and versatility, has steadily established himself as a key contributor for the Pelicans since entering the league. His ability to guard multiple positions and contribute offensively has made him an invaluable asset for New Orleans.

The contract extension comes after several seasons of consistent improvement and growing responsibility. Jones’ journey from college star to reliable NBA role player reflects both his work ethic and the Pelicans’ commitment to building a competitive team around young talent.

“This extension means a lot to me,” Jones said in a statement. “It shows the organization’s belief in my abilities and motivates me to keep pushing forward.”

The Pelicans have been focused on developing a core of young players, and Jones fits squarely into their long-term vision. His role as a defensive stopper and a steady presence on both ends of the floor has been crucial in the team’s recent progress.

Jones’ Alabama roots also highlight the growing pipeline of talent transitioning from college basketball powerhouses into the NBA. His success serves as an inspiration to current and future Alabama players aiming to make the leap to the professional level.

During his college career, Jones played four seasons in Tuscaloosa, but it took until his junior season to have a meaningful impact on the program.

In his final two seasons, Jones earned was an AP third-team All-American, first-team All-SEC, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and SEC Player of the Year in 2021. He was named to the SEC All-Defensive team in each of his final two collegiate seasons.
